What Are ECG Leadwires?

ECG leadwires are the patient-side conductors that connect ECG electrodes to an ECG trunk cable or directly to a compatible monitoring device. Each lead carries the electrical signal from a defined electrode position within the ECG lead system.

Unlike an ECG trunk cable, which forms the reusable monitor-side connection, ECG leadwires terminate at the patient electrode. The trunk interface, lead count, pin assignment, electrode connector and color standard must therefore match the intended monitoring system.

Device integration

ECG Leadwire Compatibility Is Model-Specific

ECG leadwires are not universally interchangeable. Compatibility depends on the ECG trunk cable or device interface, connector geometry, pinout, lead configuration, electrode termination and color-coding standard. A monitor brand name alone is not sufficient for selection.

JYCMED can review projects for monitoring platforms from Philips, GE Healthcare, Mindray, Nihon Kohden and other manufacturers when an existing sample, compatible part number or interface drawing is supplied.

Third-party brand names are used only to describe potential compatibility references. Compatibility must be confirmed for the exact device model and interface before production.

What is the difference between ECG leadwires and an ECG trunk cable?

ECG leadwires connect the patient electrodes to a trunk cable or directly to a monitoring device. The ECG trunk cable is the monitor-side main cable and normally connects to a detachable leadwire set.

Are ECG leadwires universal?

No. The connector, pinout, lead configuration, electrode termination and color standard must match the exact trunk cable or monitoring device.

Which information is needed to identify a compatible leadwire set?

Provide the monitor model, trunk-cable or compatible part number, connector photos or sample, lead configuration, electrode termination, color standard and required cable length.

Can ECG leadwire length, material and color coding be customized?

Yes. These items can be configured to an approved OEM drawing, subject to interface review, material selection and project verification.

Do AHA and IEC leadwire colors use the same coding?

No. AHA and IEC conventions use different color assignments. The required convention should be specified before the drawing and labels are approved.

Verification can include connector and pinout checks, electrical continuity, insulation, dimensional inspection, workmanship review and other project-specific tests defined by the approved specification.
